UK Companies House new ID verification requirement

Navigating the new UK Companies House identity verification requirements can be a complex challenge for business owners and individuals. These new rules, part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, are a significant step towards bolstering the integrity of the UK’s business register and combating economic crime. Here is a comprehensive guide to what you need to know.

The Compulsory Rollout: When Does it Start?

While voluntary identity verification has been available since April 2025, the new rules will become mandatory from 18 November 2025. From this date, new company directors and People with Significant Control (PSCs) will be required to verify their identity upon incorporation or appointment. Existing directors will need to verify their identity when they file their company’s next annual confirmation statement during a 12-month transitional period.

What is an ACSP and How Can it Help?

An Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), also known as a Companies House authorised agent, is an individual or firm that is regulated for anti-money laundering (AML) purposes, such as an accountant or a solicitor. From April 2025, ACSPs have been able to register with Companies House to verify their clients’ identities on their behalf.

Working with an ACSP offers a convenient and secure way to meet the new verification standards. They have the expertise to handle the process, ensuring all checks are compliant with Companies House requirements. This can be particularly beneficial for businesses with multiple directors or for individuals who are not UK residents.

Verifying Your Identity

There are two primary methods for identity verification:

  1. Directly with Companies House (GOV.UK One Login): This is a free, digital process using the GOV.UK One Login service. You can use the ID Check app with a valid photo ID like a biometric passport or a UK photocard driving licence.
  2. Via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP): As mentioned, you can use an ACSP to verify your identity. They will handle the process for a fee, providing a streamlined and professional service.

For the most up-to-date information and to begin the verification process, you can find the official guidance and verification portal on the GOV.UK website. The direct link to the service is www.gov.uk/guidance/verify-your-identity-for-companies-house.

By understanding these new requirements and utilizing the available resources, you can ensure your company remains compliant and contributes to a more transparent and secure UK business environment.
